Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are the CPE courses approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education?

A: Our CPE courses are approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Q. I don't live in Allegheny County. Am I allowed to enroll in AIU CPE courses?
A. Yes, educators across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are welcome to enroll in AIU CPE courses for the same cost as those who live in Allegheny County.

Q. What is the cost?
A.
Most 3-credit CPE courses are $399. See the course catalog for more information.

Q. Do all of the courses run?
A. We need a minimum of three people registered to run the course. If the course has less than that amount registered by the registration deadline, the CPE Coordinator will reach out to you about next steps.

Q. How many graduate credits will I earn per CPE course?
A.
Each AIU CPE course simultaneously counts as:

  • 3 credits toward the 24 Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE)-approved credits required to be earned within the first six years of teaching as part of the Level II Certification process
  • 90 Act 48 hours toward the 180 hours required to be earned every five years
  • Additionally, up to 18 AIU CPE credits (six three-credit courses) can be applied toward a Master's Equivalency Certification

Q. How do I submit my credits to PDE?
A. If you have successfully completed CPE courses and are ready to submit those credits to PDE for a Level II application, you may order a transcript from us. We will send that transcript directly to PDE and email you a copy, but you must complete a transcript request form and submit payment to initiate the process. Important Note: You must start an application in TIMS for the credits to be processed by PDE. Also, if you have completed CPE courses outside of the AIU, you must request a transcript from that respective IU.

Q. How can I check the status of my Act 48 hours and CPE credits?
A. Feel free to visit PDE’s Professional Education Record Management System (PERMS) to check the status of your personal records. You will need your PPID handy to access the information.
