Safety & Security

The AIU provides public schools with a variety of timely school safety information and workshops and serves as the liaison between the Allegheny County Office of Emergency Services and member schools.

Mandated Threat Assessment Training

Every K-12 public and charter school in Pennsylvania is mandated have threat assessment teams in place. By request, the AIU provides full-day training to identify required members of the team and develop a threat assessment team.

School Safety and Security Site Assessments

This is a comprehensive review of the safety and security of a school building including physical security measures and safety related policy and procedures.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

This training teaches school mental health and safety professionals to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among children and adolescents ages 12-18.

NASP PREPaRE Workshop Series

A workshop series for school mental health and safety resource officers that addresses school safety and crisis prevention/response holistically.

QPR Suicide Prevention Training

The Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) Suicide Prevention training is an evidence-based approach to suicide crises for any audience including educators, community members, parents, youth, and more.

Emergency Operations Plan Development

Pennsylvania schools are required to have an emergency operations plan. By request, the AIU guides public school administrators in building a comprehensive emergency operations plan that takes a multi-hazard approach.

Mutual Assistance Group

This group consists of safety and security professionals from local schools and meets routinely to discuss policies and procedures, collaborate on best practices, share resources and support, and more.

Training and Exercise Development

The AIU works with schools and partner agencies to identify and meet training goals through targeted activities and tabletop exercises designed to test emergency plans.

Incident Management Classes

In partnership with the Allegheny County Office of Emergency Services and Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools Technical Assistance (REMS TA) Center, the AIU offers a variety of school safety related training in virtual and in-person formats.

School Resource Officer Trainings

By request, the AIU works with the National Association of School Resource Officers to provide a variety of training for school resource officers and administrators.

School Safety Role-Alike Meeting

The AIU convenes weekly informal virtual meetings that serve as an update for K-12 school safety matters as well as a valuable networking and information-sharing forum. Quarterly meetings are conducted in a more formal setting with a focus on a particular topic and typically offer directed training or guest speaker.
