Open Tabs 2026: Building connections across school technology teams

On June 17, educational technology professionals from across the region gathered at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit for the second annual Open Tabs conference, dedicated to collaboration, innovation, and the people who keep technology running in schools.

The conference opened with a keynote from Tara Nattrass, chief innovation strategist for education at Lenovo, who challenged attendees to look beyond the technology itself and focus on its impact on people. Nattrass discussed the opportunities and risks of AI and emphasized the importance of responsible innovation, thoughtful use of data, maintaining productive struggle in learning, and prioritizing the human relationships that remain at the heart of education.

Attendees explored topics ranging from AI, cybersecurity, and accessibility to network infrastructure, device management, and student-led technology support. Sessions highlighted practical approaches to strengthening email security, preparing for new ADA accessibility requirements, using AI to support app vetting and coding, managing modern device environments, and building stronger partnerships between technology teams and educators. Participants also shared real-world lessons learned from school construction projects, e-sports programs, network monitoring, and emerging technologies shaping K-12 education.

More importantly, Open Tabs created opportunities for meaningful conversations among peers. The exchange of ideas, experiences, and solutions supported the value of a strong regional community of educational technology professionals.
