Awards & Recognitions

The AIU is extremely proud of the accomplishments of its employees, programs and divisions. Below are just a few of the recognitions and awards that our caring and compassionate staff have recently received.

2025 Apple Award

Nadia Abbondanza

Nadia Abbondanza, a counselor in the Non-Public Schools Program, received the Apple Award, which is given annually to a K-12 professional in the program for demonstrating superior contributions and support. Abbondanza was credited for navigating complex student issues with empathy and insight, as well as building a strong sense of trust and rapport.

2025 Annie Sullivan Award

Chris Garofalo

Chris Garofalo, a health and physical education teacher at Pathfinder School, received the Annie Sullivan Award. The honor goes to an employee who promotes and champions the needs of individuals with disabilities. Garofalo was nominated due to his efforts to ensure individualized support to all students, allowing them to achieve their own goals.

2025 Award of Excellence

Michael Ladick

Michael Ladick was presented with the Award of Excellence in the AIU’s Alternative Education Program. Ladick, a counselor in the program, was described as an integral part to the program’s PBIS efforts and his enthusiasm that encourages students to learn.

2025 World of Gratitude Award

Kathy Rombach

Kathy Rombach, an English as a Second Language teacher, won the World of Gratitude Award. She was recognized for her ability to build connections with students, their families, and administration, ensuring multilingual learners receive the support they need.

2025 Helping Hands Award

Joelle Orris

Joelle Orris, a senior secretary at Mon Valley School, received the Helping Hands Award. Orris goes above and beyond her duties to assist with several student activities and help keep operations throughout the school running smoothly.

2025 Heart of a Hero Award

Erin Pucka

Erin Pucka, a Head Start teacher, earned the Heart of a Hero Award, presented with the Allegheny County Head Start Education Association. Pucka was honored for her caring efforts that help prepare students for kindergarten.

2025 Mission Possible Award

The Mission Possible Award is presented to AIU employees who have exhibited a positive and influential impact on their work environment, overcame an obstacle or fostered cooperation and collaboration in their work group, all while carrying out their responsibilities.

The work of Mission Possible Award honrees demonstrates excellence in supporting the AIU’s core mission of advocating and advancing equitable opportunities for every learner. These staff members exemplify going above and beyond to complete a mission.
