Effective behavior support requires more than responding after a problem occurs. It requires understanding why behavior happens and intentionally designing conditions that promote student success. Teachers will learn to create environments that support learners’ diverse needs in order to prevent or reduce the likelihood of interfering behaviors occurring. Using a functional lens, teachers will identify patterns related to stressors, unmet needs, and skill deficits that contribute to behavior. Additionally, time will be spent on learning how to select and teach replacement behaviors that are efficient, serve the same function as the interfering behavior, fit the context of the environment, and are socially appropriate.
