During the month of March, the Allegheny Intermediate Unit’s Stand for Children Committee collected food to support the AIU’s Special Education Schools’ backpack programs. These programs provide students with food to take home over weekends and extended holiday breaks.
At the conclusion of the food drive, it was determined that Mon Valley School had the greatest need and received the collected food donations. In addition, hygiene products were donated and distributed through the Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness program to local shelters serving individuals in need.
Vocational students from the AIU’s Special Education Schools played an important role in collecting and organizing the donations for distribution. In total, 25 backpacks were filled with food and sent home with students in need over spring break.
We would like to thank AIU staff, Mon Valley School staff and private vendors for their generous contributions throughout March, as well as the Materials Handling vocational students for their assistance in preparing the backpacks.
