    Students compete in four different hands-on
    challenges.  Past competitions have had students 
    design a skyscraper using newspaper, create a
    new roller coaster and even launch straw rockets.   
    Each school may register 3 teams.  Fee - $10 per
    student 

    Wild Investigations

    Pittsburgh Zoo
    and PPG
    Aquarium

    February 5, 6 and 7

    Students in grades 3-6 are invited to a day of Wild
    Investigations with the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG
    Aquarium.  There will be challenging science
    problems, scavenger hunts and visits from live
    animals.  Fee - $10 per student

    STEM Design Challenge

    4-8

    University

    March 6, 2019

    Teams of students (up to four) will be given a
    challenge in the fall to design and build a K’Nex
    structure.  They will have from October until March
    (student competition) to create a blueprint and
    narrative about their structure and then will be
    asked to build it at the competition.  Fee - none

    The MS and HS Pennsylvania Computer Fairs are
    an annual event that highlights Pennsylvania
    students' application skills and computer
    knowledge. Students are able to unleash their
    creativity, learn how to convey information more
    dynamically, and enhance the learning process. 
    Teams must register on the computer fair
    websites.  Fee - none

    Awards

    Soldiers and
    Sailors

    May 2019

    The Allegheny Intermediate Unit and the Allegheny
    County Library Association partner to present the
    Children’s Choice Awards. Similar to a Mock
    Newbery program, school and public librarians will
    work together to help students (in grades 3-6)
    choose the best book of the year.  Students will
    have until March to read 3 of 8 nominated books
    and then vote for their favorite. In May the winning
    books will be announced at an event. 
    Fee - $5 per student for the event
