SUMMARY:Structured Literacy Secondary Special Educators 6-12
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Allegheny Intermediate Unit’s Training and Consultation team for this IN-PERSON training.\n\n\nThis comprehensive professional development series is designed specifically for elementary special education teachers to deepen their knowledge and instructional practices in literacy. Participants will explore the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy frameworks\, equipping them with the tools and strategies necessary to support students with dyslexia and other reading disabilities. Meets Chapter 49 requirements. \nContent will include: \n\nFoundations of the Science of Reading -Understand the interdisciplinary research behind how the brain learns to read and the implications for instruction.\nPrinciples of Structured Literacy -Learn the essential components of explicit\, systematic\, and cumulative instruction\, with a focus on morphology\, syntax\, semantics\, comprehension\, and fluency.\nUnderstanding Dyslexia and Reading Disabilities- Identify characteristics of dyslexia and other reading difficulties\, debunk common myths\, and explore the neurobiological basis of these disabilities.\nAssessment and Data-Driven Instruction – Gain hands-on experience with informal diagnostic assessments and the effective use of progress monitoring measures to inform instruction and intervention planning.\nIntervention Design and Implementation – Apply knowledge of reading science to deliver effective\, individualized interventions and accommodations tailored to diverse learners.

SUMMARY:Supporting Struggling Students Classroom Behavioral Interventions
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Allegheny Intermediate Unit’s Training and Consultation team for this HYBRID training series.\n\n\nThis comprehensive professional development series is designed to equip school personnel with effective strategies to support students who struggle in the classroom environment. The series includes a blend of asynchronous and in-person learning to provide a thorough understanding of behavioral interventions. \nPrerequisite: \nTo maximize the benefits of this training\, it is recommended that participants attend a classroom management training prior to this series. A strong foundation in classroom management will support effective implementation of the advanced strategies presented. Learn more about the Classroom Management training series.(opens in new tab)

SUMMARY:Schema Based Instruction in Math Additive and Multiplicative Schemas
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Allegheny Intermediate Unit’s Training and Consultation team for this IN-PERSON training.\n\nSolving mathematical word problems is an ongoing problem for students with both reading and math learning disabilities\, as well as students who do not have an identified learning disability. Schema-based instruction is a problem-solving strategy that emphasizes identifying the underlying structure or schema to create a visual representation of the important information in order to be able to solve the problem.Additive schemas are problem-solving structures that involve combining\, comparing\, or separating quantities using addition and subtraction. Common types include Part-Part-Total\, Compare\, and Change situations\, each emphasizing how quantities are related through an additive relationship. Multiplicative schemas are problem-solving structures that involve relationships between quantities using multiplication or division. These include Equal Groups\, Comparison\, and Proportional situations\, where one quantity is a multiple or a fraction of another.
