SUMMARY:Making That Matters: Soldering Skills for Accessible Play
DESCRIPTION:Learn skills like soldering to make toys more accessible to children with physical disabilities. \n\n\n\n\nDescription \nAre you looking for projects that your school’s STEAM program or club can use to develop and hone basic making skills? Are you curious about additional\, real-life applications for the tools and skills your students are learning? Are you wondering how toys can be hacked to make them more accessible to children with physical disabilities? \nThis hands-on workshop will introduce participants to assistive technology making skills to create usable access products. Participants will learn basic soldering to join wire segments and assemble electrical components for use in a variety of assistive technology applications. \nThose skills – along with some 3D-printed parts – will be applied to create a mechanical switch that could be used by an individual with physical disabilities. Each participant will also make a battery interrupter and switch-adapt an electronic toy that can be used with the scratch-built switch. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring a reusable shopping bag to carry completed projects home at the end of the day. \nBackground | The AIU is a proud contributor to the 412 Ability Tech Ecosystem \nWhat to Bring | A reusable shopping bag to carry completed projects home \nWho Should Attend | General education teachers\, special education teachers\, assistive technology specialists\, occupational therapists\, and other accessibility-minded individuals (Beginners are welcome – no previous making experience is required)

SUMMARY:Building Bridges: Collaborative and Proactive Solutions to Student Behavior
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Allegheny Intermediate Unit’s Training & Consultation Team for this IN-PERSON Training.\n\n\nCollaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS)\, developed by Dr. Ross Greene and outlined in The Kids Who Aren’t OK: The Urgent Case for Reimagining Support\, Belonging\, and Hope in Schools\, is a practical\, relationship-based approach to supporting students with challenging behavior. This session will explore how CPS can be used across all three tiers of a PBIS framework. Participants will learn simple\, usable strategies and tools to identify the real problems behind student behavior and engage students in solving those problems together. Instead of focusing on changing behavior in the moment\, CPS shifts the focus to understanding why the behavior is happening and working collaboratively with students to address those underlying challenges. The process is both proactive (addressing problems before they escalate) and collaborative (solving problems with students rather than doing things to them). Research shows that CPS not only reduces challenging behavior\, but also builds important skills such as flexibility\, frustration tolerance\, and problem-solving. Participants will leave with practical strategies and resources they can immediately apply in classroom and school setting.

SUMMARY:Schema Based Instruction in Math Additive and Multiplicative Schemas
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Allegheny Intermediate Unit’s Training and Consultation team for this IN-PERSON training.\n\nSolving mathematical word problems is an ongoing problem for students with both reading and math learning disabilities\, as well as students who do not have an identified learning disability. Schema-based instruction is a problem-solving strategy that emphasizes identifying the underlying structure or schema to create a visual representation of the important information in order to be able to solve the problem.Additive schemas are problem-solving structures that involve combining\, comparing\, or separating quantities using addition and subtraction. Common types include Part-Part-Total\, Compare\, and Change situations\, each emphasizing how quantities are related through an additive relationship. Multiplicative schemas are problem-solving structures that involve relationships between quantities using multiplication or division. These include Equal Groups\, Comparison\, and Proportional situations\, where one quantity is a multiple or a fraction of another.
