Residents take advantage of COVID-19 vaccine clinic at McKeesport Family Center

The McKeesport Family Center served the community in yet another way on Friday, Aug. 27 after hosting a vaccine clinic in partnership with UPMC.

Vaccine recipients were given the choice of receiving the 2-dose Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine or the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine.

McKeesport resident Clarissa Wallace said was getting teased by some of her siblings for not getting vaccinated.

Several of her sisters, retired from the medical field, wondered why she held out.

“I always said I wanted to wait a year after (the first vaccine was administered),” she said, but full FDA approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine earlier this week put Wallace over the top.

“It was time,” she said.

She called her medical provider seeking a shot and once she heard the McKeesport Family Center was hosting a clinic nearby, she interjected “I'll go there!"

After a 15-minute waiting period, Wallace said she felt “wonderful” following her first shot. She was given a purple bag full of post-vaccination goodies including hand sanitizer, water, juice, a small snack and an informational sheet on COVID-19.

Wallace and other Pfizer-BioNTech patients will receive their second shot on Sept. 17.

"Given we service the whole family, we wanted an accessible place for families to access vaccination," said program director Lori Vollman.

The vaccine clinic is one of many programs and services offered at our family centers across Allegheny County including home visits, parent and child activities, family counseling, transportation and much more.
