Head Start and Early Head Start students show gains

Continuing their track records of success, the AIU’s Head Start and Early Head Start programs prepare our youngest students for success.  Children in the Head Start program are assessed three times per year using the Teaching Strategies GOLD assessment system.  Expectations are based on widely accepted developmental milestones.  Click here to learn more about the success of the AIU’s Head Start and Early Head Start programs.

Children made gains in school readiness skills including in cognitive areas around literacy, mathematics and language.  The $20 million a year program serves about 3,000 students in Allegheny County in classrooms and home settings.

As the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the region, the AIU’s Head Start and Early Head Start staff adapted to mandated school closures by recalibrating services and reaching out to families.  From March to July 2020, educators shared 864 virtual learning activities with children, sent 264 live messages about food and other resources and processed 95 enrollment applications.  Click here to learn more about the AIU's Head Start and Early Head Start programs.
