New Grant Will Expand PRIDE Program At Pathfinder

Student repairing bicycle The Pathfinder School has been awarded a significant grant that will go towards expanding the reach of the successful PRIDE program.

The Competitive Integrated Employment grant in the amount of $21,000 was issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education Bureau of Special Education and administered by PaTTAN. The Pathfinder School is one of just 17 schools from across the state that was selected to receive the grant.

The grant will go towards providing secondary transition services for students with disabilities and engaging local businesses in hiring our students.

The Pathfinder School's PRIDE Program is designed to propel 18 to 21 year-old students with mild to moderate needs into their transition to life after school. The full-time PRIDE Program provides an intense training experience through real world opportunities in the community. The PRIDE transitional program is a staple of the Bethel Park community where the school is located. Students working in either a volunteer or paid work capacity gain valuable experience at places like the AIU, Giant Eagle, Office Max and other employers.

The additional funding will allow Pathfinder students and staff to expand this outreach and show businesses why our students are such a valuable asset.

The staff will receive additional training and job coaches will be able to provide additional support during evening and weekend hours that students will work.

The funding will help support network meetings hosted by the school that draw in potential employers.

The student will also have new shirts and hats so that they will be recognized as Pathfinder students.

Pathfinder principal Nicholas Fratto said the ultimate goal is to bolster the work opportunities for students in the community. These additional educational resources will bridge the students' gap to the workforce with the utmost preparation and support, putting them in prime position for lifelong success.
