Math & Science Collaborative Secures $50,000 Workforce Grant

Math & Science Collaborative

Congratulations to the AIU’s Math & Science Collaborative (MSC), in partnerhsip with the public workforce development board (Partner4Work), for securing a $50,000 Educators in the Workforce Grant from the PA Department of Labor and Industry!  With this funding, the MSC, in collaboration with Pittsburgh-based international businesses, are able to sustain the Educators Corporations Partnership for STEM Learning program, also known as ECP.  Through this effort, educators are able to visit STEM work environments and gain a better understanding of how to prepare students for success in college and the workforce.  Over the past eight years, the MSC has led similar programs serving nearly 250 educators, including teachers, librarians, counselors and principals.  Michael Fierle, the MSC program director, said that the effort has impacted thousands of students throughout the region.

“We have been forging partnerships through our educator in the workforce program before it became popular.  We are really proud that corporations and school districts continue to see the value-added by participating in this program.  This benefits both groups,” he said.

During a school year, districts partner with a corporation.  Through site visits, active engagement in STEM learning and personal reflections, educators learn the crucial STEM skills needed to succeed.  In return, corporate professionals gain a better understanding of STEM education at the K-12 level.  ECP presents an opportunity for educators and STEM professionals to work together to help students see a connection to the world beyond the classroom, and provides students with experiences that are more directly transferable to their careers.

Congratulations to the Math & Science Collaborative and thank you to our partners, PPG, Arconic, EATON and Partner4Work.
