Continuing Professional Education
The AIU offers a wide variety of opportunities for educators to earn Act 48 and continuing professional education (CPE) credits. Workshops and online courses are offered throughout the year and CPE credits can fulfill requirements associated with obtaining Level II or Master's Equivalency certifications and Act 48.
Educational Technology and Innovative Practices
The Allegheny Intermediate Unit offers many professional development opportunities for technology integration and educational technology services.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Program Specialist Certification
Allegheny Intermediate Unit offers a blended model for the 18-credit ESL Program Specialist certification program. This program will include online classwork, in-person class meetings and field experience. The courses are taught by ESL professionals currently working in the field and supervised by the ESL program director.
IDEA Training and Consultation (TaC)
Educational Specialists are available to provide technical assistance and professional development in the presentation, interpretation and implementation of all phases of federal law that was reauthorized in 2004. Emphasis is placed on improving education results for all children to ensure the effectiveness of special education programs and services.
Instructional Coaching (PIIC)
The Pennsylvania Institute for Instructional Coaching (PIIC) is a statewide resource that provides an intermediate unit mentor who collaborates with instructional coaches to support teachers in developing consistent, high-quality classroom instruction and practice.
Math and Science Collaborative
The MSC coordinates efforts and focuses resources on strengthening mathematics and science education. Through its Math & Science Partnership, the collaborative hosts leadership academies and seminars.
Reading Achievement Center
The Reading Achievement Center provides services and support designed to increase student learning and achievement in literacy. The program provides educators in Allegheny County schools access to professional development, high quality materials, and resources to transform and sustain effective literacy instruction pre-K through Grade 12.
Social Studies
Allegheny Intermediate Unit provides curriculum guidance and teacher professional development in various formats: Social Studies Network, Social Studies Symposium and Social Studies Curriculum and Instruction guidance.
transformED
transformED is an initiative of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit that connects educators with the professional learning, technology access, peer networks, and grant funding they need to start, scale, and sustain transformational change.
