Part-Time Adult Education Instructor - Family Literacy Program

  • Position Title: Adult Education Instructor Family Literacy Part-Time 

    Location: East Allegheny

    Position Summary:

    This position provides classroom instruction to adults in a variety of adult education settings, in accordance with program and funding source policies and emerging best practices, using a variety of instructional strategies that engage program participants in learning. Instructors will also participate in all professional development, curriculum development, and student documentation practices per program policies.  Classroom locations are in Carnegie and East Allegheny. 

    Duties and Responisbilties:

    1. Attend new teacher training and orientation sessions
    2. Implement the academic and workplace readiness curriculum in a manner consistent with the program design and state standards
    3. Implement and model parenting and basic literacy strategies for students in alignment with the parenting curriculum.
    4. Create a classroom environment characterized by respect and rapport that promotes a culture of learning
    5. Adhere to admission, orientation and student placement policies.
    6. Accommodate newly-enrolled students on an on-going open or managed enrollment basis
    7. Develop an individualized educational plan /adaptation plan for each participant according to the needs of English language learners and low literacy students
    8. Participate in orientation and evaluation for new students according to program guidelines as needed
    9. Address each participant’s current academic and social level of functioning by offering the appropriate level of challenge and guided practice for basic academic, social and life skills within a multi-level class
    10. Administer monthly progress assessments using appropriate informal assessment methods
    11. Manage student behavior and classroom procedures effectively
    12. Work with case manager to report all information related to family goals, employment or training, including student case work as assigned
    13. Identify and immediately refer to program coordinator and case manager any issues regarding classroom management, teacher, tutor or student concerns
    14. Maintain the security and confidentiality of records in compliance with AIU, state and federal policies and regulations
    15. Maintain accurate student records and submit them to the coordinator according to schedule
    16. Accurately maintain daily attendance records and complete other clerical and data related responsibilities as assigned
    17. Assist coordinator in the development of program policies and procedures which reflect funding agency guidelines, policies and procedures
    18. Participate and support new staff orientation and teacher development as requested by coordinator
    19. Participate and support teacher observation/evaluation processes including teaching performance and demonstrated support of program curriculum and methods
    20. Participate in  state mandated activities, including but not limited to Career Pathways and other state program initiatives, staff development, training or other activities that support program development as directed by the coordinator
    21. Regularly attend scheduled staff meetings
    22. Participate in procedures supporting emergency plans, as requested by coordinator
    23. Monitor the inventory, use and distribution of instructional materials to students
    24. Maintain policy for removing/borrowing materials from the Resource Room
    25. Notify the coordinator when class materials or supplies are needed
    26. Maintain a clean and orderly classroom, staff work areas and storage areas
    27. Teach other classes in emergency staffing situations
    28. Perform a variety of non-instructional responsibilities as needed and assigned, such as clerical, data collection and entry, curriculum development, case management, recruitment, training, and/or  any additional housekeeping tasks related to the general operation of the Adult Education Program

    Requirements:
    1. Bachelor’s Degree; Education or related field and a minimum of one (1) year teaching experience classroom-based or small group instruction
    2. One (1) year experience in Adult Education and Early Childhood/Elementary Practices preferred
    3. Good written/oral communication and interpersonal skills
    4. Ability to handle multiple priorities
    5. Ability to comply with the AIU Conduct policy
