SUMMARY:Solid Stuff: Using Materials Science to Engage and Excite Students
DESCRIPTION:  \nExplore hands-on materials science activities to engage students in STEAM at this free transformED Educator Workshop.\nThis session provides STEAM teachers with several simple\, engaging materials science activities to incorporate into the STEAM classroom. As the world becomes increasingly technological\, students need to understand the applications of science and technology in their everyday lives. \nHands-on activities are a great way to engage students with the applications of materials science and engineering to the world around them. Solid-state chemistry is often overlooked in the classroom and materials science provides a great way to introduce and illustrate the properties of solids – such as metals\, ceramics\, and polymers. These hands-on activities provide engaging activities for students to gain an understanding of materials science and the applications of materials in the world around them \nBackground | The ASM Materials Education Foundation creates the spark of scientific and engineering knowledge that ignites a journey of innovation and discovery. The Foundation doesn’t just support classrooms – it transforms them. Through dynamic\, hands-on curriculum\, educators are equipped with a treasure trove of tools that go beyond textbooks\, igniting a passion for learning that stretches far beyond the four walls of a traditional classroom. \nWho Should Attend | STEAM Teachers (7-12)\, STEAM Coaches\, and Administrators with a keen interest in STEAM \nLunch will be provided. \n**Special Location | West Mifflin Area High School\, 91 Commonwealth Ave\, West Mifflin\, PA 15122  \n \nRegister on Eventbrite\n  \nLearn more about transformED

SUMMARY:Check Your Feed: How is Student Digital Well-Being Influenced?
DESCRIPTION:  \nUncover how social media trends can shape student perspective\, & learn actionable strategies to empower students to navigate digital content at this free transformED Educator Workshop.\n  \nRECOGNIZE how students are being influenced. This workshop aims to help participants identify and decode hateful elements in trending content\, including algostrategies\, false and misleading information\, punchlines\, and micro-aggressions. \n REPORT and/or take appropriate (in)action. Because cognitive skills related to perception\, awareness\, and empathy are still developing\, teens frequently dismiss hate and extremism as an inevitable part of viral participation. This workshop emphasizes teaching students to become active\, as opposed to passive\, consumers of social media. \nREDUCE exposure to hate and extremism. With the influence and intention of social media algorithms\, the concern is that viral trends may be an entry point into a meandering rabbit hole that leads toward more extremist views. This workshop helps participants assist students in reducing this exposure. \n\nBackground | The facilitators are a multidisciplinary and multi-organizational research team\, funded by the Collaboratory Against Hate Research and Action Center in Pittsburgh\, PA\, studying viral extremism on TikTok to create an educational intervention to raise awareness\, mitigate harm\, and prevent radicalization especially among young digital native people. \nWhat to Bring | Laptop or tablet\, if possible \nWho Should Attend | Teachers\, Administrators\, School Counselors \nLunch will be provided. \nRegister on Eventbrite\n  \nLearn more about transformED\n

SUMMARY:AT Making - Solder\, Switches & Stuffing
DESCRIPTION:  \nFree transformED Educator Workshop\nDiscover AT-making skills for creating accessible technology solutions by learning soldering and other useful techniques.\nAre you looking for projects that your school’s STEAM program or club can use to develop and hone basic making skills? Are you curious about additional\, real-life applications for the tools and skills your students are learning? Are you wondering how you can hack toys to make them more accessible to children with physical disabilities? \nThis hands-on workshop will introduce participants to assistive technology (AT) making skills to create usable access products. Participants will learn basic soldering to join wire segments and assemble mono and stereo components for use in a variety of assistive technology applications. Those skills – along with some 3D-printed parts – will be applied to create a mechanical switch that could be used by an individual with physical disabilities. Each participant will also make a battery interrupter and switch-adapt a stuffed\, electronic toy that can be used with the scratch-built switch. \nSkill Level: Beginner (no previous knowledge expected or needed) \nWhat to Bring | All materials will be provided for this workshop. Participants are encouraged to bring a reusable shopping bag to carry completed projects home at the end of the day. \nWho Should Attend | STEAM teachers and other educators who would like to learn valuable “making” skills in ways that can increase accessibility for others \nLunch will be provided. \nRegister on Eventbrite\n\nLearn more about transformED\n

DESCRIPTION:Free transformED Educator Workshop\nAn AT-making party to create accessible solutions through toy adaptations and 3D-printed products\nNovember is National Assistive Technology Awareness Month. Celebrate by joining an AT-making party at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit. Participants will spend the day creating AT switches from 3D-printed components\, designing and sharing 3D products\, adapting simple toys\, creating and assembling accessible aids for daily living\, or creating and adapting items of their own. The purpose of this day is to produce accessible solutions for a wide variety of potential users that can be distributed to students and adults in our region. \nSkill Level: No formal instruction will occur at this event. A variety of projects will be available for this making event\, however\, most will be geared toward participants with basic to intermediate skills in AT-making. For participants with no maker experience\, consider attending the AT Making – Solder\, Switches\, & Stuffing workshop on the day prior to this event. \nWhat to Bring | All supplies and the products intended for later distribution will be provided for this workshop. If participants are interested in adapting their own toys or products\, they are welcome to bring those items to this event to make use of the tools and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow makers. \nWho Should Attend | Anyone with an interest and a bit of experience in AT-making \nLunch will be provided. \n \nRegister on Eventbrite\n  \nLearn more about transformED
