SUMMARY:Building Thinking Classrooms: Part 1
DESCRIPTION:If your students lack confidence and/or motivation to engage in mathematics\, come learn how to Build a Thinking Classroom for K-12.\n\n\nBuilding Thinking Classrooms: Part 1 \nDo your students lack confidence and/or motivation to do mathematics? \nAre your students content to wait for the right answer from the teacher? \nDo your students lack perseverance when the answer is not immediately obvious? \nIf so\, come engage in a professional learning community to learn more about a thinking classroom and collaborate with peers to share ideas and implementation strategies. A thinking student is an engaged student! \nBuilt on 14 key practices teased out over 15 years of research\, it’s a way of teaching that gets students up on their feet\, collaborating and thinking through challenging problems on a daily basis. \nA thinking classroom looks very different from a typical classroom. Students are working in groups rather than individually\, they are standing rather than sitting\, and the furniture is arranged so as to defront the room. Closer inspection will reveal that the teacher is giving instructions verbally\, is answering fewer questions\, and has drastically altered the way they give “homework.” \nPart 1 focuses on the following practices: \nWhat Types of Tasks We Use \nHow We Form Collaborative Groups \nWhere Students Work \nHow We Arrange Furniture \nHow We Answer Questions \nWhen\, Where\, and How Tasks are Given \nWhat Homework Looks Like \nHow We Foster Student Autonomy \nHow We Use Hints and Extensions \nHow We Consolidate a Lesson \nHow Students Take Notes \nAll participants receive the book\, Building Thinking Classroom In Mathematics\, 14 Teaching Practices for Enhanced Learning. \nAudience: K-12 educators and leaders \nWhen: October 1\, October 29\, and December 3\, 2024 \nPrice: $450/participant*; Administrators may attend with the teacher(s) from their district/building at no additional cost \n*The cost includes a copy of the book\, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics by Peter Liljedahl \nLocation: Allegheny Intermediate Unit\, 475 E. Waterfront Drive\, Homestead\, PA 15120 \nAct 48 hours will be awarded pending approval by PDE for those who attend all sessions and complete related assignments. \n**Part 2 of BTC will be offered in Spring 2025. Stay tuned for more details. \nDon’t miss out on this opportunity to learn and grow! See you there at East Waterfront Drive\, Homestead\, PA\, USA.

SUMMARY:Extra Math Block: Strategies to Support Students Where They Are
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn strategies to help students succeed in mathematics at their own pace and level.\n\n\nExtra Math Block: Strategies to Support Students Where They Are \nCome join us at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit for an exciting event focused strategies and routines that can be integrated into a block of instructional time and help all students grow their mathematical agency and identity. \nAre you struggling to meet students where they are in the mathematics classroom? Do you have an extra block of time dedicated to teaching and learning mathematics? Come learn about a center-based model for providing options to students during the math block that creates an inviting environment for students while also addressing their learning needs. An extra block of math doesn’t need to be a time students dread but rather an interactive and engaging opportunity to increase student agency. A structure for the math block will be introduced including an opening routine followed by centers at varying levels of challenge. A tool will also be shared to determine which standards may be an appropriate focus during the math block. \n  \nPrice: $450 \nAudience: K-12 mathematics teachers and leaders (including interventionists) \nWhen: October 8\, October 17\, and October 24\, 2024 \nWhere: In-person at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit \nAct 48 hours will be awarded pending approval by PDE for those who attend all sessions and complete related assignments. \nDon’t miss out on this opportunity to learn and grow! See you there at East Waterfront Drive\, Homestead\, PA\, USA.
