Smart START
In response to a nationwide shortage of substitute teachers, the Smart START program was designed to recruit, select and train persons who hold a Bachelor's degree, but are not certified teachers, to become emergency substitute teachers.
FBI Clearance
The Pennsylvania School Code was amended to require FBI checks for all prospective school employees who have direct contact with children.
Continuing Professional Education
The Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Development department provides a variety of customized professional education options to teachers, administrators, and other school staff.
Teacher Induction Program
Continuing Professional Education offers a 2 credit Teacher Induction Program course for new or returning teachers where participating teachers are afforded the opportunity to select from a wide variety of topics and to learn from veteran educators. Districts choose to have their staff participate in the course as a component of the district’s Induction Plan. The course runs during the school year and is open to all districts in Allegheny County.
Math and Science Collaborative
The MSC coordinates efforts and focuses resources on strengthening mathematics and science education. Through its Math & Science Partnership, the collaborative hosts leadership academies and seminars.
Transforming Learning through Technology
Educators in southwestern Pennsylvania have a responsibility to prepare students for life in a technology-based world. We can provide a learning experience combining face-to-face and online instruction, increases teachers’ capacity to effectively integrate technology into instruction, encouraging student learning and creativity. Participants may choose from the school year-long Institute or the Summer Academy.
