Early Childhood Education
Programs in the Early Childhood Education department are designed to assist children younger than five years acquire the skills needed to be ready for kindergarten. The AIU provides early intervention services to the 42 suburban school districts in Allegheny County.
Therapeutic Crisis Intervention
Therapeutic Crisis Intervention is a training program of the Cornell University Family Life Development Center and is designed to provide staff and parents with skills, knowledge and confidence to deal with children in crisis, to be in control in a crisis situation, and to help a child to learn and grow from the experience.
Adult Education & Workforce Development
Adults in Allegheny County have many educational opportunities through the AIU's Adult Education and Workforce Development department. Most of the programs target economically and academically challenged parents who are interested in improving educational and employment opportunities for their family. Others courses help potential employees develop skills needed in the workplace.
Adult English as a Second Language
The Adult ESL Program seeks to help any non-English-speaking person to learn American English.
Family Literacy
AIU Family Literacy provides family literacy services focused on families residing in the Mon Valley as well as providing outreach services throughout Allegheny County.
Alternative Education Program
The Alternative Education Program (AEP) is a county-wide system of education that provides instruction, counseling, and advocacy for children and youth in detention centers, jails, juvenile institutions, child welfare shelters, and community-based learning centers.
