Nanci Sullivan, Ed.D.
Assistant Executive Director for Special Education and Pupil Services
Dr. Nanci Sullivan has spent 39 years in education and serves as the Assistant Executive Director for Special Education and Pupil Services for the AIU. She is a member of the AIU’s Executive Leadership Team and oversees a division that includes three schools for exceptional children as well as special education and pupil personnel services. Prior to coming to the AIU, Dr. Sullivan was the Director of Pupil Personnel at South Fayette School District, a special education master teacher in Ohio, Instructor and Coordinator of Generations Together at the University of Pittsburgh, Supervisor of MAT Interns at Falk Laboratory School at the University of Pittsburgh, Educational Researcher and Co-principal Investigator on an Office of Special Education Program grant at the University of Pittsburgh and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh as well as the Director of Special Education and Transition Coordinator in other school districts in southwestern Pennsylvania.
Dr. Sullivan has been honored with numerous awards for her contributions to the fields of education, special education and pupil services. The awards bestowed upon her and/or her department are as follows: East Central Ohio Special Education Regional Resource Center Outstanding Special Educator Award (1997), the Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Special Educator State of Ohio Award (1997), Ohio Teacher of the Year Finalist (1998), the Donald D. Hammill Foundation Research Award (1994), Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award from the University of Pittsburgh (1996), the Fr. Columbo Devlin Education Award from the Franciscan University of Steubenville (2005) and the Pennsylvania Association of Pupil Administrators Pupil Services Award of Excellence (2012).
In addition to her career in public education, Dr. Sullivan has taught graduate classes for the University of Pittsburgh and is a published author. Her book, entitled “Surviving Childhood Leukemia: Walking with a Shadow,” was published through Greenwood Publishing Company in 2004. Dr. Sullivan has also published professional journal articles regarding her research of the educational and psycho-social implications of surviving childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Dr. Sullivan had the opportunity to work for a few weeks for seven summers in eight countries abroad presenting her research and/or consulting in the area of special education in their schools.
Dr. Sullivan has served for 15 years on the Pennsylvania Association of Pupil Services Administrators (PAPSA) Executive Board. In addition, Dr. Sullivan has served for two years on the executive board as the executive officer and secretary of the board.
Dr. Sullivan has chaired the Pennsylvania Intermediate Unit (PAIU) Special Education Budget Committee at PaTTAN in Harrisburg for 2015-2016. She has served on the 2015-2016 and will continue to serve for the upcoming year on the "Superintendents' Advisory Team" on Special Education at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit. She also serves on the PAIU sub-committee on transition services in Pennsylvania.
Dr. Sullivan holds a bachelor’s degree from the Franciscan University of Steubenville, a master’s degree from the University of Dayton, a doctorate degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a post-doctorate in Executive Advanced Leadership and the Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility from Duquesne University.
