Building Relationships with Policymakers

All effective advocates have one thing in common: relationships with key policymakers. Building and sustaining relationships is the core of successful advocacy efforts. At first this may seem like a daunting or intimidating task; however, building relationships is not difficult. If you take a little time, your efforts will have great rewards.

Everyone knows the saying, “It is easier to ask a friend for something than a stranger.” This is true in advocacy. By communicating with legislators and building a rapport with them and their staff, you can develop a relationship where you are the education expert in your community. Your legislators will rely on your expertise to provide information related to a specific issue.

The only way to build a relationship is to start communicating with policymakers.
