Smart START - How to Apply

Step Two: Collect Supporting Documents

In addition to filing an online application, you need to mail a number of supporting documents to complete your Credentials File. Important instructions are listed below.

Cover Letter

This General Letter of Interest should include the applicant's Social Security Number, and should be addressed "To whom it may concern" or "To the participating school districts." The letter should serve as an introduction of an individual applicant to the parties listed above.

Resume

This should be a brief outline of your education and work experience.

Essay

Please write an essay describing your reasons for wanting to participate in the Smart START Program. Sign your name at the bottom of the essay.

References

Submit three (3) written letters of reference. These references can be the same or different than the references you listed on your online application.  The references should be current and at least one should be from a professional employee.

Official College Transcripts

Official Transcripts in a college sealed envelope must be submitted before the first orientation session. These transcripts are necessary for showing proof of your bachelors degree and for securing an emergency permit.

Act 34, Act 151 and Act 114 Clearances

Copies of Act 34, Act 151, and Act 114 Clearances must be received before you are eligible to teach in a classroom (dated within one year.)  Applicants must register with Cogent Systems prior to going to the fingerprint site.  Registration is available online 24 hours/day, seven days a week at http:///www.pa.cogentid.com

The Allegheny Intermediate Unit has a fingerprinting unit and is opened M-F from 9-3:30.  Appointments are not necessary.

Submit Documents

All supporting documents can be sent to the Allegheny Intermediate Unit and should be neatly typed or hand-printed using black ink. You may also bring everything with you to the Orientation.  If you do mail your supporting documentation please mail all of the above materials to:
