The Allegheny Intermediate Unit's Alternative Education Program (AEP) is an educational system providing instruction, school counseling, and advocacy for students (grades 7-12) who have been temporarily excluded from a traditional school setting for a variety of circumstances. The AEP strives to address students' academic and behavioral needs in the context of an approved Pennsylvania Department of Education Alternative Education for Disruptive Youth Program. The program serves students living within Allegheny County who may or may not be affiliated with Juvenile Court or the Office of Children, Youth, and Families.
The Alternative Education Program operates alternative schools approved by the PA Department of Education. In addition, the AEP offers students at Shuman Detention Center and the Allegheny County Jail an opportunity to continue their education while detained. Both programs educate incarcerated youth with secure facilities.
The AEP boasts over a 50 year history of educational success with students from urban and suburban neighborhoods in Allegheny County.
