Grant Development Workshops

Allegheny Intermediate Unit offers intensive, one-day grant development workshops designed to give school leaders an understanding of the grant process and how to get started developing solid grant proposals.  Workshops are held on-site for school/district teams or at AIU's Central Office in Homestead, PA.

Workshops cover:

  • Finding grant opportunities
  • Using needs assessment as the key to planning for success
  • Developing program plans
  • Setting proposals apart from the competition

Announcements about upcoming and future workshops will be made on this page and through the AIU Grant Network.  To be added to the AIU Grant Network, please email Leslie McConnell.

Grant Leadership Academy & Grant Team Training

Over the past several years, opportunities for competitive grant funding have decreased and competition is more intense. In order to remain competitive in the area of grant acquisition for the purpose of increasing and improving programming to support strategic plans, staff must have a strong capacity to research grant opportunities, develop strong applications, implement effective programs, and be able to evaluate those programs for efficacy.  The Grant Leadership Academy (GLA) addresses the key elements of effective grant development, including finding grant opportunities and funders, conducting needs assessments, developing sustainable programs, planning for evaluation and performance measurement, and developing a budget.

Allegheny Intermediate Unit is now offering its successful Grant Leadership Academy to schools and IUs as a customized immersion professional development opportunity for grant teams at your location or AIU's central office.  We will customize our GLA for your needs.

Comprehensive Needs Assessment

A strong needs assessment is key to developing integrated, supportive program structures and for ensuring the best possible environment for programs to be successful.  Further, a single comprehensive needs assessment can minimize or even eliminate the need for separate, initiative-specific needs identification processes in order to maximize efficiency and chances for success.

Grant Facilitation & Support

Schools that do not have sufficient funding to offer new and enriching programs often have the accompanying dilemma of no staff with the time and experience to pursue and apply for funding.  Grant funding allows schools to enhance or expand successful programs, implement proven programs that increase student achievement, offer creative programs that expand students’ horizons, provide capacity-building professional development for teachers, and improve educational resources for the school and community.

Our Grant Development Specialist provides schools and AIU programs with support for specific grant competitions throughout the proposal development process, from assessing needs and developing programs, to constructing narratives and budgets, to coordinating and mapping resources and programs, and applying for competitive funds from local, state, and national funding sources.  We assist programs in navigating and learning the grant development process to increase staff capacity to develop successful grants.  Fees vary based on time and travel.

AIU also offers consortium facilitation and pre-grant workshops for select opportunities.

Grant Proposal Review

If your school or program has already developed a grant, we can review your proposal and provide feedback and recommendations to strengthen your application based on the funding agency and its guidelines.

Grant Network

Part of pursuing grant funding is knowing where to find grant opportunities and having the resources to develop a thorough proposal.  AIU’s Grant Network provides both.  Through its free electronic email communications, members learn about a variety of opportunities and resources.
